How do I choose what I’m going to do when I leave school?
How do I know if God is calling me?

What to do after leaving school is often confusing, not because of all the options available, but because many young adults tell me they have this overwhelming desire to make a difference in the world.
Life was motivated by the “I need” philosophy in the 1960s, the “I want” in the 1970s, “I deserve” in the 1980s and “I deserve a break” in the 1990s.
The “I deserve a breaks” of the 1990s were often confused with small indulgences—exotic cuisine, theatre going, travel, virtual reality. Now, life is motivated by the need to be more human. The “I deserve a breaks” come from serving the less fortunate. Look for opportunities in community service (ADRAcare projects such as soup kitchens), other cultures (the Service To Others Really Matters Company) or the wider world (through Adventist Volunteer Service in the 10/40 window or with the Adventist Development and Relief Agency).
If you can’t serve immediately after leaving school, and there aren’t opportunities overseas, do a few years of tertiary study or work and serve locally at the same time. Then take a year off and serve as a volunteer.
As Bertina, a girl in Denmark who started a youth church, says, “Ask God to reveal the vision of your life to you, then live it!”
