Behren Schulz
Producer’s career on fast forward

Behren Schulz. Is he a model employee? He’s never taken a sick day, and his boss is one of his best mates.

Behren has been involved with graphic design and film production at Adventist Media in Sydney for the past four years. He’s the youngest staff member. Initially a technical production assistant, he’s worked on nearly every job since being employed.
A recent promotion to associate producer reflects what Behren has contributed to the Seventh-day Adventist Church. His involvement in mission (and because he has heaps of fun at work) has been an important factor in working for the church.
“I have a strong desire to make the church relevant to young people,” he says.
Behren comes from Maitland in New South Wales. He started a mining engineering degree at Newcastle University in 1996. “I’ve always wanted to whip up a bridge, or something like that.” The former Macquarie College student tutored others in piano, violin, maths and physics at school.
He is committed to continued study—“being a bit of an intellectual”—and also has a degree in film and television studies.
Behren drove taxis in his spare time while studying at university. He has owned more cars than he can remember and loves Formula One racing.
However, his creativity eventually enticed him to explore the design and production of electronic images for video. Although, he says, it would not be uncommon to find him and his boss in the media centre’s garage building a trailer for a satellite dish.
He took a break from his studies to help produce The Search, a 20-part evangelistic video series exploring issues relevant to Christianity in a non-preaching style.
He has since produced videos featuring literature evangelists and puppets, and has at times found himself in a giant platypus suit.

Behren’s videos get noticed at session
The videos drew strong interest from the General Conference Health Department at the recent session in Toronto, Canada.
The session brought more work when Behren was asked to produce the broadcast graphics for the evening programs. He also produced the Trans-European Division report, which took 125 hours of “intense” editing just months before the session began.
Pastor Miroslav Pujic, communication director for the Trans-European Division, commented, “I will never go anywhere else to get a video produced. I will always come back to Sydney and Adventist Media, and to Behren Schulz.” The report received the best reaction from the delegates.
After the session, Behren presented a workshop on video editing to 147 international students at Andrews University in Michigan, USA.
He’s currently completing a bachelor’s degree in media communications at Macquarie University.
Adventist Media is looking at ways of communicating with young people. Behren is involved in this and says he is always looking for new ways the church can communicate to young people.
