The winner of Adelaide Christian radio station Life FM’s “Discover 06” talent search, Skye Parkinson, released her debut CD, My Child, in early October.
Her six-track set takes its name from the song she wrote and performed to win the competition, in front of 600 people at Adelaide’s Norwood Town Hall last year.
"Discover 06” was inspired by the success of Australian Idol.
And like the famous TV show, Skye will now receive airplay, publicity, instore and online promotions (as well as benefit from astute industry advice and guidance, thanks to the contacts she’s made through "Discover 06”).
The 21 year old says that for as long as she can remember, it has been her dream to become a singer. She cites Americans Kirk Franklin, CeCe Winans and Kiwi Brooke Fraser among her influences.
"Since becoming a Christian, my aim has been to be a Christian artist,” Skye says.
Parkinson comes from a musical family, where her father plays trombone with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, her mother is a “beautiful singer” and her brother plays French horn.
Life FM’s program director, Sarah McIllwraith, says Skye is an "incredibly talented” performer who is a "great role model”.
"The winning song ‘My child’ is a real encouragement to young girls, letting them know their value doesn’t come from looking like what they see in the movies and magazines but that God loves them just the way they are,” Sarah says.
"Promoting artists who present such a positive message is very important to Life FM,” she emphasises.
"We want to see more family-friendly events in Adelaide and ‘Discover’ has been a perfect way to bring people with a passion for good music together, as well as something safe for the whole family.
"‘Discover 06’ has given all the competitors an opportunity to showcase their talent to a broader audience.
"We’re so excited to develop ‘Discover’ and see it turn out such a success,” Sarah adds.
