Sister act brings
“don’t conform” message to AGMF
The Reality Zone’s Cameron Want
talks to BarlowGirl about nonconformity.
When you’re young, being diff erent is usually the kiss of death, unless you’re starring in a teen movie, or you’re “diff erent”—just like everyone else.
No matter how many anarchy symbols you doodle on your ripped jeans, or how many times Napoleon Dynamite geek-dances his way into secondary school popularity, the truth is most teenagers accept conformity as a social survival technique.
But three young women—Becca, Alyssa and Lauren Barlow—are making a career out of nonconformity.
And the popular US “sister act,” BarlowGirl, is bringing its “don’t conform” message to AGMF 07 in Toowoomba for Easter (April 6-8).
The critically acclaimed Christian rock group who lives by the message “Don’t be conformed, be transformed” taken from Romans 12:1-2, claims people today are “bombarded with impurity.” “We feel so passionately about this issue, so it’s diffi cult,” says Becca, the group’s lead guitarist.
“God wants us to be pure, because He’s trying to protect us and save our hearts,” she explains.
The girls, who grew up “as preacher’s kids,” still look to their parents for advice and support.
“Our parents pretty much do everything. They lift such burdens from us,” Becca says.
“They’re the other two members of the band,” she quips.
BarlowGirl has achieved signifi cant success in the Christian music sector with its eponymous 2004 debut, and its most recent CD Another Journal Entry .
