Mac Powell has never been a lyricist of the calibre of, say, Switchfoot’s Jonathan Foreman. But “Wire” is particularly dull in the wordsmithing department. “I’ll love you till I die,” “I believe in love,” “come on back to me” (not to mention songs about being musicians)—c’mon! Is this the best he could come up with? If their worship albums sound like overly sugary affairs, at least “Wire” rocks from the word go. Sure there are slow numbers, but from the guitar buzzing like a power tool on “Till the Day I Die” to the southern-fried belter “I Got a Feeling,” there’s enough to keep your feet tapping and your mind off those lyrics.
