McLaren begins by tackling the message through the political, social, religious and historical context in which Jesus lived and served, outlining key ideas and little known-facts to those not claiming to be Biblical scholars. Reading The Secret Message of Jesus is like joining a conversation with a good friend who thinks outside the box and challenges you to do the same. McLaren provides fascinating insights and complex ideas and makes it real for us today.
Not every aspect is one you will agree with as McLaren pushes the envelope, however you will find yourself nodding your head, smiling and at times deeply touched by emotion. Regardless of your take, McLaren’s overall message is clear, “It is tragic for anyone, especially anyone affiliated with the religion named after Jesus, not to be clear about what Jesus’ message actually was,” (page 7) and you are reminded throughout that Jesus’ message is the key.
Thirsting for knowledge and insight like many of us, McLaren asks the questions and states the doubts many of us have secretly voiced, yet he doesn’t stop, he continues by unraveling and outlining the powerful message of Jesus, “we are under a gentle, compassionate assault by a kingdom of peace and healing and forgiveness and life. Could Jesus’ secret message become any clearer than that?” (page 60) The answer is no.
